Automation Engineer

General Purpose of Position:
This role will support Aprecia Pharmaceuticals by providing daily mechanical and electrical automation expertise for operation and maintenance of Aprecia’s 3DP-based (three-dimensional printing).  Supports the mechanical and control system troubleshooting for production and packaging equipment to ensure maximum equipment uptime.  Participates in cross functional project teams aimed at increasing equipment reliability, process optimization, and equipment uptime.
 
Primary Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):
1 Support and lead daily troubleshooting and repair or preventive maintenance of automated equipment and control systems, including but not limited to RSLogix, FactoryTalk View, CompactLogix, ControlLogix, MicroLogix, to ensure maximum equipment uptime and reliability.
2 Initiate work orders for repairs/and or adjustments to the manufacturing and packaging equipment.
3 Utilize technical knowledge to identify and recommend process improvements to existing equipment and systems to improve safety, reliability, and operability.  Provide engineering support pertaining to implementing process improvements, increasing equipment reliability, and troubleshooting of production and critical systems equipment.
4 Support the development and implementation of training modules for specific production or critical systems equipment aimed at increasing proficiency of Maintenance Technicians.
5 Assist with technical investigations of non-conformance or manufacturing equipment issues.  Develop suitable corrective preventive action plans to increase equipment reliability and uptime.
6 Assist with preparation and periodic review of equipment manuals, SOPs (standard operating procedures), and training modules for production equipment and critical systems.
7 Support and prepare appropriate change control documentation as required for modifications to qualified equipment.
8 Provide support during design, procurement, installation, and start-up of new/modified equipment.
9 Coordinate with outside resources as needed for equipment installation support, equipment troubleshooting, or equipment optimization.
10 Work with manufacturing and maintenance personnel to facilitate and provide direct support during equipment and utility installations.

No direct reports

Travel:
Position may require travel at times to support equipment development.

Work Shift:
This position works days, but responsibilities may be covered across multiple shifts when required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to review, interpret, and update electrical schematics, P&IDs, machine schematics.
  • Proficient in advanced automation and equipment process control troubleshooting.
  • PLC program knowledge and ability to apply to equipment troubleshooting.
  • Understands safe use of tools and equipment required to effectively execute job requirements.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Able to take task from beginning to completion.
  • Able to work through and solve problems.
  • Must be able to work well in a team environment, as well as independently, on tasks and projects.
  • Applicable knowledge of cGMPs.

Education and Experience:
  • High School diploma or technical school degree or equivalent military experience preferred.
  • 2-3 years of direct experience in Allen Bradley PLCs and control systems using RSView, RSLogix, and Factory Talk applications.
  • Working knowledge of machine shop equipment and metal fabricating techniques
  • Working knowledge of PC hardware, operating systems, and common industrial networks required.
  • Experience working with outside contractors, OEMs.
  • Proficient in Excel, Work, and PowerPoint.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:    
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time inside of the production area while wearing required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
  • Ability to lift and manipulate materials and parts (1-80 lbs.) to accomplish repairs, installations, and maintenance.
  • Occasional awkward body positions (i.e., twisted torso, lifting, kneeling, bending, reaching, etc.) for brief periods of time during the troubleshooting and/or repair of the facility.
  • Exposure to outdoor elements (i.e., hot weather, cold weather, precipitation) for brief periods of time.
  • Manual dexterity to operate general office equipment and computer-controlled equipment.
  • The employee will be working around live electrical circuits and mechanical devices in the execution of their duties.
